This disruption started around 1:30 PM ET and coincided with a surge in reports on Down Detector. OpenAI posted a status update on its website at 2 PM ET, acknowledging the high error rates being experienced by ChatGPT, its API, and Sora.

As of 6:15 PM ET, OpenAI has reported that Sora is fully operational, and APIs are beginning to recover. However, a comprehensive fix for ChatGPT and its APIs is still in progress, as stated in the latest update from OpenAI. The specific upstream provider causing the issue has not been disclosed.

Microsoft, the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI, experienced a power issue at one of its datacenters that impacted services in North America, including Xbox cloud gaming. This issue occurred around the same time as the problems with OpenAI, but the connection to the upstream provider remains unspecified.

Some customers in the South Central United States were affected by storage latency, timeouts, and HTTP 500 errors due to the power incident. Microsoft confirmed that the datacenter experiencing the power outage in the South Central US AZ03 region was fully restored to power by 5 PM Eastern Time on Thursday.
