Consider incorporating our tools and services into your classroom or educational program, or even by establishing a News Decoder Club at your college or university.

For recent college graduates seeking their first “real” job, where should they turn? Journalist Betty Wong of News Decoder advises individuals not to assume that their initial job will be their dream career.

Realizing that you want to delve into long-form writing and multimedia storytelling while still a university student is a remarkable experience. An interview with Cathal O’Luanaigh, News Decoder’s Program and Communications Manager, sheds light on these aspirations. Wong aspires to have the freedom to choose assignments and travel to various locations of interest. Continue scrolling down to read the complete interview.

Wong asserts that it is uncommon for new reporters to have such opportunities early in their careers. Rather than expecting your first job to be a dream come true, regard it as a continuation of your learning journey; one that pays you, as opposed to covering your tuition. This perspective may prove to be the most beneficial approach.

Even if you find yourself in a less-than-ideal position as a news assistant with challenging responsibilities, Wong believes that you can learn a great deal from working with individuals who possess greater expertise.

She recalls, “During my early years as a reporter, I had the opportunity to sit alongside two seasoned interviewers. In between my own calls, I observed their methods, which we called ‘schmoozing.’ They were experts when it came to conducting interviews.”

From this experience, Wong learned the importance of building a rapport with the interviewee before diving into questions. Successful interviewers focus on establishing a connection, fostering a back-and-forth exchange.

View your job as a form of education. Marcy Burstiner, Editorial News Director at News Decoder, shared a similar experience from her early career.

“My first job out of university was at a small newspaper in the Midwest,” Burstiner recalled. “Despite attending a prestigious journalism school, I initially felt that the newspaper was beneath me.” However, through observing the local police reporter and his respectful approach to interviews, Burstiner was able to improve her own interviewing skills significantly.

Her time spent working in a small town newspaper was akin to acquiring another master’s degree. Wong emphasizes the importance of securing your initial job at a reputable news organization that fosters growth and support.

Part of a journalist’s role is to cover stories that may challenge powerful figures or institutions in the communities they serve. It’s crucial that you have the backing of your editor when faced with pressure to censor your work. Wong advises aspiring journalists to ensure that their organization will advocate for their release if they find themselves in risky situations like conflict zones.

Family opinions significantly influenced Wong’s choice of career. Growing up in a traditional Chinese household, she initially aimed for a career in engineering due to early interests in science and mathematics. However, her passion for writing and involvement in her school newspaper during high school led her to pursue journalism instead.

After realizing that engineering wasn’t her true calling, Wong had a heartfelt conversation with her mother about changing her career path. Her mother’s support was conditional on Wong pursuing her dreams. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a new exciting chapter, where Wong took charge of her future post-graduation.

In conclusion, the significance of your first job goes beyond financial security. Embrace it as a stepping stone towards your career aspirations, where valuable lessons and experiences await. Nurture your skills, learn from seasoned professionals, and pave the way for future successes. Your journey begins with the first step on this fulfilling path of self-discovery and growth.
